NDT System Add-On — Impact Echo
If these conditions are not satisfied, the waveform will be of low amplitude and the amplitude spectrum will not include a dominant peak at the frequency corresponding to the thickness Eq 2. The P-wave is then reflected back into the member and the cycle begins again. The use of traditional stress wave methods, such asgm ultrasonic through transmission, v1383 identify the presence of anomalies in structures requires access to both faces of a member.
Detection of Internal Defects The P-wave generated by impact will reflect at interfaces within the concrete where there is a change in acoustic impedancewhich is defined as the product of the density and wave speed of a material. CTG-2 requires Windows Device. The thickness is calculated from this measured frequency and the P-wave speed obtained from Procedure A.
Cracks Delaminations Honeycomb Thickness Voids. The P-wave generated by impact will reflect at interfaces within the concrete where there is a change in acoustic impedancewhich is defined as the product of the density and wave speed of a material.
The OE Website is loaded with Tech Brief and project photos using the equipment shown on this website. C13883 notes and footnotes excluding those in tables and figures shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

The frequency of P-wave arrival is determined as the frequency with a high peak in the amplitude spectrum. The upper plot in this example shows the surface displacement waveform obtained from a test of a solid concrete slab.
The impact-echo method is based on monitoring the periodic arrival of reflected stress waves and is able to obtain information on the depth of the internal reflecting interface or the thickness of a solid member.

Furthermore, it is not possible to determine the depth to anomalies. The P-wave speed is calculated by dividing the distance between the two transducers by the travel time. A sensitive displacement transducer next to the impact point picks up the disturbance due to the arrival of the P-wave. This makes the impact-echo method inherently powerful for detecting air interfaces, such as those due to delaminations, cavities, and honeycombed concrete. The Viking software allows the user to place cursors at the points corresponding to the P-wave arrivals, and calculates the value of Cp.
In impact-echo testing, the P-wave is used to obtain information about the member. The method is based on the assumption that the concrete plate has the same P-wave speed throughout its depth.
This standard is not included in any packages. The following lists the reflection coefficients of a P-wave travelling through concrete and incident normal to an interface with air, water, soil, or steel:.
If the area of the reflecting interface is large, the impact-echo response will be similar to that of a solid plate except that the thickness frequency will be shifted to the higher value corresponding to the depth of the interface. The DOCter comes in two versions: No other units of measurement are included in this standard. If the document is revised or amended, you will be notified by email. Your Alert Profile lists the documents that will be asgm.
Interface Reflection Coefficient Concrete-air There is a certain level of systematic error in the calculated thickness due to the discrete nature of the digital records that are used.

Impact Echo IE investigations are performed to assess the condition or thickness of slabs, beams, columns, walls, pavements, runways, tunnels, and dams. Besides thickness determination and flaw detection, the DOC can be used to estimate the depth of surface-opening cracks. Impact-Echo TestThis procedure measures the frequency at which the P-wave generated by a short-duration, point impact is reflected between the parallel opposite surfaces of a plate. If the interface between the concrete and subgrade is rough, the amplitude spectrum will have a rounded peak instead of a sharp peak associated with a flat surface.
